Drew Brees to make retirement decision in next week or two?

Will he, or won't he? It's the big question hovering over the status of New Orleans Saints veteran quarterback and one-time Super Bowl champion Drew Brees.

Brees turned 42 years old in January, and he suffered serious rib and lung injuries in November that threatened to sideline him through at least the remainder of the 2020 season. While Brees is signed and could run it back for one more year, Saints coach Sean Payton hinted during a Wednesday "PFT Live" appearance that the signal-caller is ready to ride off into the sunset.

"I think within the next week, week-and-a-half, we’ll get a little bit more information relative to Drew," Payton explained. "We’ll wait on Drew’s announcement."

The word "announcement" immediately leads one to assume Brees is retiring, and it makes sense that he would wait until after Super Bowl LV to make his intentions public and avoid taking attention away from the championship game involving the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Kansas City Chiefs.

Earlier in the day, Payton told NFL Network's "Good Morning Football" that he is interested in re-signing Jameis Winston, the first overall pick of the 2015 NFL Draft who sat behind both Brees and Taysom Hill in 2020.

Winston is set to hit free agency, though, and he may choose to pursue a job with a team willing to offer him a legitimate chance of starting next fall.
