Denver Broncos quarterback Drew Lock may be discouraged after Teddy Bridgewater was named QB1 over him. But the 24-year-old is, instead, taking the high road and vowing to back the team up however he can.
"No finger-pointing, no negativity," Lock said via the Broncos' official website. "It's going to be about me finding ways to still make this team great, whether that's in practice, working with Teddy, trying to find ways for him to get better. Whatever he needs me to do, that's pretty much my goal. Look in the mirror, see what I need to get better at."
No one can blame Lock for feeling disappointed. He and Bridgewater were tied up in one of the preseason's hottest QB battles, with offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur heaping praise on the Mizzou product early on.
Ultimately, though, the veteran Bridgewater snagged the starting job after completing 9-of-11 passes for 105 yards and a touchdown in Denver's 30-3 preseason win over the Seattle Seahawks.
"Obviously, it's disappointing," Lock admitted. " I feel like, at the time, I was playing some of the best football I've played since I've been in the league. I was more confident than I've ever been... I was hoping and looking forward to being able to lead this team."
From the sound of things, at least at this point ahead of Week 1, Lock plans on still playing a leadership role -- whether he's the starting quarterback or not.
"I'm going to be myself every day I'm out here," he said. "I'm going to get better, I'm going to have fun. I'm going to bring energy to this practice, bring energy to this team and just keep being myself."
