Max Verstappen continues chase for F1 records with win at Hungarian Grand Prix

Max Verstappen won his eighth race of the 2022 Formula One season, beating Lewis Hamilton by nearly eight seconds at the Hungarian Grand Prix. He now has an 80-point lead over second-place Charles Leclerc in the driver's standings.

Verstappen, 24, needs five wins in the last nine races of the season to tie the record for wins in a season. Michael Schumacher won 13 races in 2004 and Sebastian Vettel tied that record in 2013.

On Sunday, Verstappen started tenth and drove through the field, but spun on lap 42, shortly after passing Leclerc for third.

Despite the mistake, Verstappen climbed to the lead, thanks in part to Leclerc making pit strategy mistakes.

Hamilton, 37, laid down several of the fastest laps of the Grand Prix near the end of the race, passing Carlos Sainz and George Russell late to climb to second. But Hamilton faced an 11-second deficit against Verstappen that was too much to overcome.

Next on the F1 schedule is the Belgian Grand Prix in four weeks.
