SMU HC Rhett Lashlee provides injury update on QB Kevin Jennings

The SMU Mustangs have to feel pretty good about where they're at as the final stretch of this 2025 college football season quickly approaches.

Rhett Lashlee's team is 5-2 and third in the ACC standings behind 7-0 Georgia Tech and 6-1 Virginia.

SMU is coming off a big-time win over Clemson and the Mustangs have now won three in a row and four out of their last five. Impressively enough, they've done it with quarterback Kevin Jennings battling an ankle injury that has been bugging him since the second game of the season, a 48-45 loss to Baylor.

Jennings has been playing through that injury, and on Tuesday, Lashlee revealed that while his quarterback is sore, they are not limiting Jennings in any way.

"I think the fact that he was able to play shows you that he should be fine," Lashlee told the media (h/t On3). "It’s sore, but he was a full practice participant [Tuesday]. He wasn’t limited in anything. I do not think it’s as bad as it was coming out of the Baylor game. That was the worst week because he really didn’t practice that week.”

Jennings is toughing it out for SMU

Jennings was noticeably not 100% against Clemson, but he went on to throw for 290 yards and two touchdowns with an interception. At this point, Lashlee revealed that his quarterback is just figuring out how to tough it out.

“It’s just an ankle that about every time he gets healthy, it gets re-rolled,” Lashlee said. “And I think he’s learning how to play through it. So, we’ll see. Hopefully, he feels great Saturday, but I fully expect him to be ready to go.”

Up next for SMU is a game against a Wake Forest team that won't be a pushover. The Demon Deacons are 4-2 and this will be a major road test for the Mustangs.

After the Demon Deacons is a vital matchup against No. 9 Miami. The Mustangs also have No. 19 Louisville remaining on their schedule, so the healthier Jennings can get, the better it will be for SMU.

Jennings has thrown for 1,948 yards with 17 touchdowns against seven interceptions so far this season.
