Reporter: 'Expect' massive payday for Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes

After multiple quarterbacks signed colossal contracts, it's time for Kansas City's Patrick Mahomes to cash in.

"Expect Mahomes, before the season begins, to once again become the highest-paid player in league history," reported NBC Sports' Mike Florio.

Ravens QB Lamar Jackson recently signed a five-year, $260M contract, making him the highest-paid player in the league ($52M average per year), per Over the Cap. That came after Eagles QB Jalen Hurts signed a five-year, $255M extension in April. He's the NFL's second-highest-paid player ($51M APY).

Mahomes is the seventh-highest-paid player ($45M APY) in the league, but he likely wants to revise his contract — which has nine years remaining —  since he's the NFL's best QB.

The 27-year-old has won two league MVPs, two Super Bowls and has earned five Pro Bowl nods in six seasons. Per OddsChecker, he's favored to win his third MVP in 2023.

Chiefs general manager Brett Veach indicated the team has already considered re-evaluating the contract.

In a news conference before the draft, he said, "There will be a couple more contracts that still have to get done — Cincinnati's Joe Burrow and Los Angeles' Justin Herbert — and once they do, I think you look at everything and assess where you are and what you can do and take it from there."

Burrow's and Herbert's fifth-year options were activated this offseason, extending them through 2024, so Kansas City may try to restructure Mahomes' deal before they receive pricey, multi-year extensions.

The details remain vague, but Kansas City could tack three years and $156M on the end of the existing deal, per Florio.

Per OTC, the Chiefs rank 26th in cap space ($3.73M), but both sides can compromise.

"Ultimately, Mahomes is trying to strike the balance of fair compensation with leaving enough cash behind to have a team that lets him pursue championships," wrote Florio.

A revised deal ensures that Mahomes remains in Kansas City, allowing the organization to chase more Super Bowl titles.
