As the NFL makes everyone wait for Thursday’s official schedule release to find out specific dates and times for its 18-week, 272-game slate, there are a few things that will be noticeably different about the 2023 season.
Below are the biggest changes fans should know about ahead of the NFL schedule release:
Monday tripleheader on Christmas day
Typically, the NFL has scheduled just two games on Christmas when it falls on a Monday (see 2006 and 2017), but after seeing a 14.5 percent ratings surge for Christmas games in 2022, the league will try its hand at an unprecedented Dec. 25 tripleheader.
Last year’s Packers-Dolphins Christmas tilt averaged 25.9 million viewers — a top-10 regular-season game in terms of viewership — and NFL games on Christmas Day average approximately 22.9 million viewers. First Black Friday game
While Thanksgiving games are a time-honored tradition, the NFL has previously left the day after the holiday alone. Not anymore. Now, football fans can get the most out of Amazon Prime on Nov. 24 as they stream the league’s first Black Friday game and do some online holiday shopping.
After announcing the decision in March, Prime Video VP Jay Marine stated with so many people having the day off, the goal was to “expose all fans to our broadcast.” That week will likely be the busiest of the NFL season with three games on Thanksgiving and one on Black Friday plus the regular Sunday and Monday slate of games as well.
No more network exclusivity for late games
Traditionally, the Sunday late games in the AFC have aired exclusively on CBS, while NFC ones aired on Fox. But in 2023 — in an effort to showcase more competitive matchups — networks can carry games from either conference.
