Georgia football team passes on invitation to visit White House

The national championship-winning Georgia Bulldogs will not be visiting the White House after declining an invitation on Tuesday.

A university spokesperson cited a scheduling conflict, stating the date offered for the visit was “not feasible” for the players. The White House also offered to host UGA on June 12 along with other NCAA championship winning teams and players, but the team declined.

“However, we are appreciative of the invitation and look forward to other opportunities for Georgia teams moving forward,” the spokesperson said in a statement, per the Athletic.

The last college football national champion to visit the White House was LSU in 2019. Alabama and Georgia did not attend in 2020 and 2021, respectively, due to health concerns during the COVID pandemic.

The news comes not long after President Joe Biden announced he and First Lady Jill Biden would host the University of Connecticut men’s basketball team and the LSU women’s basketball team on May 26 to honor their national championship wins.

Georgia rolled through TCU 65-7 in the CFP national championship game on Jan. 9, ending the season 15-0 and becoming the first school to repeat as champions since Alabama in 2011 and 2012. It was also the second consecutive year the team won 14 or more games.

The Bulldogs’ 65 points were the most scored in a national title game since the BCS era (1998-2013). It was the sixth time in the CFP era a team scored 40 or more points in a national championship win.
