Jamal Murray helps Nuggets debunk popular myth in Game 2 win

Never again can anyone say Denver Nuggets star Nikola Jokic has no help.

Jokic recorded a triple-double in Game 2 against the Los Angeles Lakers. However, a massive fourth quarter from Jamal Murray was what ultimately boosted the Nuggets to a 108-103 victory and a 2-0 series lead in the Western Conference Finals.

Murray was ice-cold throughout most of Game 2, shooting only 29 percent from the field (5-of-17) and 22 percent from beyond the arc (2-of-9) for 14 points over the first three quarters. But, while Jokic missed all three shots he attempted in the fourth quarter, Murray put the Nuggets on his back. Trailing the Lakers 79-76 entering the final stanza, the Nuggets leaned on Murray, not the multiple-time MVP.

Following a dismal three quarters, he bounced back in a big way, scoring 23 fourth-quarter points, shooting 6-of-7 from the field and 4-of-5 from three.

After his remarkable late turnaround, an elated Murray credited his Nuggets' teammates, who urged him to keep firing despite having little success early.

"My team told me to keep shooting. I was getting the looks I wanted," he said via ESPN. "We knew they would fall."

Jokic got his on Thursday, scoring 23 points with 17 boards and 12 assists. However, if not for the supporting cast led by Murray, Jokic's effort would have likely come in a Game 2 loss.

Along with Murray, starters Michael Porter Jr. (16) and Aaron Gordon (10) finished in double-figures, while Bruce Brown added 12 points off the bench.

On Thursday, the Nuggets squashed the narrative that Jokic doesn't have the necessary talent around him to contend with the league's best. Following Game 2's win, head coach Michael Malone said they'd need every bit of that talent to get past the Lakers.

"We know how great Nikola is, but every great player needs help, and to have a closer like Jamal is definitely something that we cherish," Malone said via Mile High Sports

The conference finals now shift to Los Angeles for Games 3 and 4. The Lakers will host the Nuggets for Game 3  onSaturday at 8:30 p.m. ET, looking to avoid falling behind 3-0 in the best-of-seven series.
