Warriors urged to ‘do right’ by Stephen Curry

One NBA writer says the Golden State Warriors need to “do right” by superstar point guard Stephen Curry this summer.

Grant Hughes of Bleacher Report thinks the Warriors “have to do whatever it takes to make sure next season is all about giving Curry the best possible chance to win.”

Golden State lost to LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers in the 2023 Western Conference Semifinals in six games.

“Golden State has to do right by Steph,” Hughes wrote. “It owes it to him—probably literally, considering his singular impact on the franchise’s skyrocketing valuation over the last decade—but certainly figuratively.

“So when Golden State decides what it’s willing to pay Draymond Green if he declines his player option, and when it comes time to consider trading Jordan Poole, the only question worth asking is: What would be best for Curry? And yes, that includes ownership potentially accepting the financial pain of staying miles above the tax line and even pretending the brutal second-apron penalties don’t exist.

“The Warriors have to do whatever it takes to make sure next season is all about giving Curry the best possible chance to win.”

Former Defensive Player of the Year Draymond Green can become an unrestricted free agent this summer if he declines his 2023-24 player option. All-Star shooting guard Klay Thompson has one year left on his contract, so he’s eligible for an extension this offseason. President Bob Myers stepped down from his position, so someone new will be making the big decisions in the front office.

Curry is still in the prime of his career, so the Warriors have to do whatever it takes to surround him with the right talent in order to compete for championships. The two-time MVP averaged 29.4 points and 6.3 assists this season while shooting 49.3% from the field and 42.7% from beyond the arc.
