C.J. Stroud is going to start the second game of the preseason for the Houston Texans.
While this may seem a bit risky, because frankly, every preseason rep is risky, NFL insider Ian Rapoport is reporting that this is just standard operating procedure for new head coach DeMeco Ryans.
All healthy players (read: starters) are going to play early for the Texans in Saturday's preseason game against the Miami Dolphins.
To say that these are important reps for Stroud would be understating just how big this game is for the Texans, though. Sure, it means nothing on the books, but they took him No. 2 overall in this past draft because they think he can and need him to be "the guy".

He's not yet been named the starter for the regular season over Davis Mills, and with a shaky performance in his first game (2-of-4 with a sack and an interception), it's all about repetition right now for Stroud as far as the Texans are concerned.
"Is Stroud going to start the opener? If he plays well, obviously the drumbeat will get louder and louder," Rapoport explained. "But for the Texans, this is really about reps. Game situations against the highest competition they can find. Making sure that Stroud is as ready as humanly possible for the season before the Texans make that all-important quarterback decision."
One would think that Houston would play its No. 2 overall pick right away, but that's not always the smartest move at quarterback in the NFL. Sometimes it makes the most sense for a rookie quarterback to take some time to get his feet wet.
We'll see which way the Texans choose to go in that regard sooner rather than later.
