Commanders CB injured after body slam from Ravens TE Mark Andrews

Three days after getting body-slammed by tight end Mark Andrews during a joint practice with the Baltimore Ravens, Washington Commanders cornerback Danny Johnson’s name will appear on the team’s injury report.

Per Ben Standig of The Athletic, Johnson, who is just 5-foot-8 and 190 pounds, suffered a torn rotator cuff from the incident and is listed as day-to-day.

Johnson’s injury happened after he helped break up a Lamar Jackson pass along the right sideline during practice on Tuesday. He picked up the loose ball from the turf but was grabbed from behind by the 6-foot-5, 247-pound Andrews and thrown to the ground, which started a brawl between the Ravens and Commanders sidelines.

It was the second scuffle of the practice. Earlier Ravens receiver Tylan Wallace and Commanders rookie cornerback Emmanuel Forbes exchanged a few shoves after Forbes tried swatting the ball from Wallace’s hands after the whistle blew.

The 27-year-old Johnson joined the Commanders as an undrafted free agent in 2018. He’s played in 53 games over five seasons, including eight starts. He’s served primarily as a returner, logging 38 kick returns for 856 yards and averaging 22.5 yards per return.

Playing sparingly as a cornerback, Johnson has totaled 79 tackles, 13 passes defensed, two tackles for loss, one interception, one forced fumble and one sack. Johnson allowed 21 receptions on 39 targets (53.8 completion percentage), 167 yards and no touchdowns in coverage last season, per Pro Football Reference.
