The San Francisco 49ers have been diligent about how much they’ve put on Brock Purdy’s plate during training camp as he’s worked his way back from a torn UCL.
After taking all restrictions off the second-year signal-caller following the team’s preseason opener against the Las Vegas Raiders last weekend, head coach Kyle Shanahan disclosed that Purdy could be close to seeing his first action since the NFC Championship Game.
“I might get Brock in there for a little bit [against Denver on Saturday],” Shanahan told KNBR on Thursday. “I have not finalized that yet, but thinking about playing the ones, for possibly a series, a little in the first quarter. … If we don't (play Purdy), Sam will have the whole first half. And if those guys do open the game with Brock and some of the ones, it probably won't be much longer than a series or two."

2022
70-101 (69%)
5.9% INT rate
3 red-zone TDs
2023
138-216 (64%)
4.6% INT rate
8 red-zone TDs
Purdy worked vs 3s in 2022 and 1s in 2023, obviously a significant difference. The 49ers are very happy with his camp performance, as they should be —…
Darnold played the second half against the Raiders after Trey Lance got the start. He went 5-of-8 for 84 yards. This week, they’ll trade places with Darnold getting more reps with the second-teamers and Lance, who went 10-of-15 for 112 yards and a touchdown last week, working more with the third team.
Regardless of whether Purdy plays against the Broncos, it’s expected he will see some action in the 49ers' final preseason game against the Los Angeles Chargers on Aug. 25 — his final chance to face a live defense other than his own before the 49ers open the regular season on the road against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sept. 10, a game in which Purdy is expected to be the starter.

Purdy won his first seven games as a starter before being knocked out of the NFC Championship Game against the Philadelphia Eagles in January. He returned later in the game but couldn’t throw due to his injury.
Including the playoffs, Purdy completed 155 of 233 passes (66.5 completion percentage) and threw for 1,943 yards, 16 touchdowns and just four interceptions. He had a passer rating of 114.6 or higher in five of his first seven starts.
