Bears reportedly not sold on Justin Fields as long-term answer at QB

Prior to Sunday’s slate of games, NFL insider Jay Glazer began planting seeds of doubt regarding Justin Fields as the Chicago Bears quarterback of the future on “Fox NFL Sunday.”

Glazer followed up his remarks later in the day on the “NFL on Fox Podcast,” stating that if the third-year QB doesn’t turn things around soon, Bears general manager Ryan Poles, who did not draft Fields, could move on from the 2021 first-round pick during the offseason.

“Their current regime wasn’t the one that drafted him, so he has to earn it from them,” Glazer said. “…They were hoping he would pull it down a lot faster and start running, use more of that dual-threat…then start expanding on the passing game. Remember, they have two first-round picks for next year’s draft. They have the ammo if he’s not the answer to get somebody else.”

Chicago has two first-round picks in the 2024 draft thanks to trading the No. 1 pick in 2023 to the Carolina Panthers — both of which have the potential to be in the top five.

The 2024 draft class is loaded with elite talent at quarterback, and USC’s Caleb Williams or North Carolina’s Drake Maye might be too enticing to pass up if they’re still on the board when Chicago picks.

Like Fields, Williams also has dual-threat ability to go with a big arm and a Patrick Mahomes-esque ability to make something out of nothing. He’s many believe he’s the best QB prospect since Andrew Luck in 2012.

Maye ranks in the top 15 in the country in completion percentage (72.7) and passing yards (1,187), and he has all the desirable traits of an NFL quarterback — size, athleticism, velocity, accuracy and pocket awareness.

Fields has been an unmitigated disaster through three games. He has just 526 passing yards and three touchdowns with four interceptions, he’s been sacked 13 times and his passer rating is 67.7.

Despite adding the best receiver Fields has had in his two-plus seasons in D.J. Moore, Fields has seemingly regressed as a passer. His completion percentage dipped from 60.4% last season to 58% this year, and the percent of his throws that have been on-target fell from 71.1% to 52.3%, per Pro Football Reference.

Fields has also seen a drop in other areas including his touchdown percentage (5.3 to 3.4%), yards per completion (11.7 to 10.3 yards per), yards per pass attempt (7.1 to 6 yards per) and net yards gained per pass attempt (5.1 to 4.4 yards per), while his interception percentage rose from 3.5 to 4.5%.

The 24-year-old QB also hasn’t been the dynamic runner he was down the stretch last year either, logging just 109 yards and one touchdown on 24 carries. His 4.5 yards per run is drastically lower than his 7.1 yards per rush a season ago.
