Additional Big 12 expansion probably on hold ... for now

Big 12 commissioner Brett Yormark has certainly been aggressive as the college football landscape has changed. With the SEC and Big Ten making big moves, Yormark has moved right alongside to at least keep the Big 12 growing.

His moves may not have been on the level of the SEC adding Texas and Oklahoma or the Big Ten adding (count 'em) USC, UCLA, Oregon and Washington, but Yormark has done some good work since everything started shifting.

He picked off Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado and Utah from the demolished Pac-12 to add to his previous haul of Houston, Cincinnati, UCF and BYU.

Now a 16-school conference, the Big 12 is certainly more than relevant. The opportunity to continue expanding is ever present, especially considering the atmosphere of growth, but Yormark is putting things on hold for now.

“There’s nothing imminent,” Yormark said at Big 12 women’s basketball media day, per On3. “But I do explore all options that come to me. And if it creates value for membership — both short and long-term — I’m gonna pursue it even further. But right now, we love the makeup and composition of this conference. Love the Four Corners that are joining us.

“They’ve already started to integrate the four schools. They’ve been attending meetings. We’re strategizing on what next year looks like. So there’s nothing imminent with respect to expansion.”

The "Four Corners" Yormark is referencing has to do with the additions of the Pac-12 schools. Utah, Colorado, Arizona and Arizona State are in three of the four states that make up the "Four Corners" region of the Southwestern United States.

The new Big 12 now finds itself in all the time zones (Pacific, Mountain, Central, Eastern) and the conference appears to be set up for success in 2024 and beyond.

Whether that includes more expansion is anyone's guess, but at least for now, Big 12 expansion is probably on hold.
