Florida State considering drastic change to Mike Norvell decision

The Florida State Seminoles had to do some damage control before their bye in Week 9.

Amid a gnarly four-game losing streak, Noles athletic director Michael Alford released a statement on Monday suggesting that embattled head coach Mike Norvell was in the clear until the end of the regular season.

"As we continue to move forward this season, our comprehensive assessment of the football program will be completed at season's end," Alford wrote, via Warchant.com. "Meanwhile, we are fully committed to helping Coach Norvell and the 2025 Seminoles strongly rebound in the coming weeks."

While FSU intends to put off making the decision on Norvell until late November, there could be a change coming sooner than expected.

Per Pete Nakos of On3, Florida State could "speed up" the process to part ways with Norvell if the program loses to a 5-2 Wake Forest team on Saturday.

"The noise was loud last Sunday to make a move, but athletic director Michael Alford released a statement Monday announcing a “comprehensive assessment” would be held on the state of the program following the season. Sources have told On3 that a loss to Wake Forest on Saturday at Doak Campbell could speed up the timeline. The Demon Deacons are 5-2."

Norvell has gone 36–31 overall at Florida State, but his Noles went 2-10 in 2024. Norvell took the program to the Orange Bowl after winning the ACC championship in 2023, but has gone 5-14 since.

It would make sense for FSU to fire Norvell as soon as they have funding secured for the buyout, so they get a jump on the national coaching search.
