Should the New York Jets take a chance on Las Vegas Raiders wide receiver Hunter Renfrow before the trade deadline on Oct. 31?
On Tuesday, Bleacher Report NFL insider Jordan Schultz reported the former Pro Bowler and Las Vegas are working together to find a trade partner.
The Jets might be a good destination for Renfrow because they need a slot WR, and they can give the Raiders a pass rusher. Pro Football Focus salary cap analyst Brad Spielberger suggested New York trade defensive end Carl Lawson for Renfrow.
"All of that said, Renfrow would still represent a nice upgrade for the Jets in the slot," Spielberger wrote of the proposed deal. "Among 89 WRs with at least 100 offensive snaps, Randall's Cobb's 0.15 yards per route run ranks dead last by nearly triple the next lowest mark."
However, Renfrow only has eight receptions on 12 targets in seven games. His lack of productivity ties to a fissure in his relationship with Raiders head coach Josh McDaniels.
"It has not worked out since he got that big money deal with the Raiders, and it really comes down to a fractured relationship with Josh McDaniels," Schultz said. "I think you have a coach and player who can't get on the same page for whatever reason."
Renfrow has one year left on a two-year, $32M deal, which includes an out ($5.508M dead cap) in 2024. This might detract the Jets since Spotrac estimates they have $9.26M in cap space, just above the league average ($9.151M).
Regardless, New York (3-3) should make a move before the deadline because it will strengthen its postseason chances. The New York Times simulator gives the Jets a 24 percent chance to make the playoffs.
