Deion Sanders reveals initial plan for Travis Hunter on defense in 2024

Travis Hunter is a phenomenal athlete. Calling him a wide receiver wouldn't do him justice. Calling him a cornerback wouldn't do him justice.

He can do it all for Colorado, which is why coach Deion Sanders uses him on both sides of the ball. Hunter is both a star wideout and star cornerback for the Buffaloes.

Hunter was explosive while on the field last season, notching 721 receiving yards and five touchdowns on offense to go along with three interceptions on defense. The only problem? Hunter played in only nine games due to injury. A lacerated liver due to a hard hit was the only thing that could stop him.

Coach Prime is certainly planning on using Hunter to his full extent in 2024, but it's worth noting that there is an initial plan in place this spring to move Hunter inside as a slot corner on defense.

He can play anywhere, per his head coach, but putting him at nickel would allow Colorado to bring more talent in around him on defense.

“Moving inside just gives us some more depth,” Sanders recently explained (h/t On3). “I don’t know if he’s gonna start there. I know he’s gonna start but I don’t know if he’s gonna start in the slot or outside, whatever is best for us … So you probably didn’t get the chance to see him in the spring play in the slot, but he’s really good. He really is. So we just wanted to see a little more depth and versatility and we got four more corners coming.”

Putting Hunter at slot corner would allow Colorado to match him up with slot receivers, who are typically a bit more fast and shifty. He has the talent to neutralize that type of threat, but frankly, he has the ability to neutralize any offensive threat thrown his way.

As Sanders alluded to, whether Hunter is inside or outside, he's going to make a huge impact for Colorado in 2024.

“Travis is going to excel at wherever you place him. He’s that kind of a kid. He has that kind of character. He’s that kind of worker," Sanders said. "He studies, he prepares, he loves the darn game of football. He loves to practice, he loves to play. You see him, by the time he’s done with the darn offense, he’s running over to the defense. I mean, who does that and don’t ever complain?”
