Chiefs HC Andy Reid addresses tumultuous offseason

The Kansas City Chiefs have had an offseason to forget thus far.

It all began when second-year wide receiver Rashee Rice was involved in a multi-car collision in March and then in an alleged assault at a Dallas nightclub in early May.

It doesn't stop there. Kicker Harrison Butker recently gave a commencement address at Benedictine College for which he has been heavily criticized after making several controversial remarks.

Then on May 16, offensive tackles Wanya Morris and Chukwuebuka Jason Godrick were arrested on misdemeanor marijuana possession charges.

President Mark Donovan says the Chiefs will "react accordingly" to the investigation surrounding Rice while the team has no comment regarding Butker's recent attention.

Why? Because head coach Andy Reid doesn't think it's a big deal.

"Listen, I talk to Harrison all the time. I didn't talk to him about this, didn't think we needed to," Reid said, via NFL.com. "We're a microcosm of life. Everybody's from different areas, different religions, different races. So we all get along, we all respect each other's opinions and not necessarily do we go by those, but we respect everybody to have a voice."

Butker's comments weren't a pretty look, but Reid is right that they don't necessarily represent how the entire team and organization feels.

As for the other off-the-field issues, however, Reid says they can only do so much to ensure players are making smart decisions outside of the team facility.

"Obviously, stay in touch with them, and you can communicate with them before they leave, make sure they take care of business," Reid added. "Sometimes things happen, and then you've got to work through that."

Kansas City is trying to become the first team in NFL history to three-peat this season, but potential suspensions and outside negativity may increase the difficulty of that challenge.
