Texas Tech basketball head coach Grant McCasland is looking to build off a strong 2023 season. As such, the caliber of talent he can bring into Lubbock becomes extremely important, and the Red Raiders just landed a big piece in that regard.
Per TTU Athletics, former New Mexico forward JT Toppin will play for the Red Raiders in 2024.

Toppin projects to be an important commitment for McCasland and the Red Raiders.
He's 6-foot-9 with a wingspan over seven feet. A freshman last season for New Mexico, he averaged 12.4 points, 8.1 rebounds and 1.9 blocks per game. He led the Mountian West in total rebounds, total blocks, total offensive rebounds and shooting percentage.
He's the type of player who could have gone to the NBA this season and will certainly look to increase his 2025 NBA Draft stock while in Lubbock.
All the while, the Red Raiders continue to be in good shape.
Texas Tech returns senior guard Chance McMillian, senior guard Kerwin Walton, senior forward Devin Cambridge, junior guard Darrion Williams and sophomore forward Eemeli Yalaho from last season's 23-11 squad. With the addition of Toppin, the Red Raiders have now brought in four transfer players. He joins guard Kevin Overton (Drake), guard Elijah Hawkins (Minnesota) and center Federiko Federiko (Pitt) as new Red Raiders.
Throw in a freshman class that features three-star forward Leon Horner and four-star point guard Christian Anderson, and the Red Raiders seem to be building a contender.
