Veteran quarterback Russell Wilson allegedly is competing with Justin Fields for the Pittsburgh Steelers' starting job. Still, he is open to offensive coordinator Arthur Smith creating special packages for Fields that could be used during regular-season games.
Per Stephen Thompson of Fan Nation's All Steelers, Wilson insisted on Wednesday that practicing plays with Fields involved isn't any type of distraction during organized team activities.
"It's all about the team and us winning and I think it will strike fear in some defenses, that's for sure," Wilson explained. "...I think Justin's a franchise quarterback. He can do a lot of amazing things so we have two dynamic guys that can do a lot of special things."
Pittsburgh signed Wilson to a team-friendly contract in March, traded with the Chicago Bears for Fields and then declined the fifth-year option attached to Fields' rookie contract.
Many assumed such actions indicated that the Steelers would hold a legitimate competition through the preseason for the QB1 gig. Still, reporters who have watched springtime practices have repeatedly said that Wilson is on track to start when Pittsburgh opens the regular season at the Atlanta Falcons on Sept. 8.
Earlier this week, Fields somewhat humorously poured cold water over any idea that he could return kickoffs for the Steelers following what appears to have been little more than a misunderstanding. With that said, Wilson sounds in favor of Smith utilizing Fields' athleticism in any way that may result in the Steelers winning games this fall.
"Justin's one of the most talented guys in the NFL," Wilson added during his comments. "All the things he can do, the player and quarterback he is - he's dynamic. It's all about us winning. That's the focus."
Fields understandably hasn't yet given up on possibly being named Pittsburgh's starter before September rolls around but also should be willing to accept whatever assignments he's given as he looks to reset his career following an up-and-down three-season stint with the Bears.
As for Wilson, DraftKings Sportsbook listed the 35-year-old fifth among the betting favorites at +1200 odds to win the Comeback Player of the Year Award for the upcoming season as of Thursday morning.
Perhaps Fields can help Wilson earn that honor as a different type of offensive weapon.
