Mets honor Darryl Strawberry in fitting fashion during number retirement ceremony

The apple rises up every time the Mets hit a home run (or win) and it was a clever touch to an important day for the franchise. Even though the Mets ended up losing to the Arizona Diamondbacks, 10-5, the Strawberry did get to come up twice thanks to home runs from Mark Vientos and Pete Alonso.

Here are more highlights from Saturday's ceremony.

Strawberry spent eight years of his 17-year career with the Mets, hitting 252 home runs with 733 RBI. He helped lead the team to the playoffs in 1986 and 1988, with the 1986 team winning the World Series over the Boston Red Sox in seven games. He also finished in the top three of the National League MVP voting two different times (1988 and 1990). 

After leaving the Mets, Strawberry spent time with the San Francisco Giants, Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Yankees. He did not match his Mets success with any of those other teams.
