A look at the three Americans remaining at the 2024 French Open

Entering the second week of the French Open, only three Americans remain in the singles competitions. But does anyone have a chance of winning the second grand slam on the tennis calendar?

Here's a look at the odds (as of Sunday afternoon) of each remaining American winning at Roland-Garros, provided by Bet365.

Taylor Fritz (+8000)

The lone American male left in Paris, Fritz needed five sets to take down Thanasi Kokkinakis in Round 3. The No. 12 ranked player in the men's tennis ATP rankings faces No. 7 Casper Ruud in the next round on Monday. The two have met once previously, a 2022 win by Ruud in the Round Robin stage of the Nitto ATP Finals.

The winner of Monday's match will likely face 1-seed Novak Djokovic in the quarterfinals, making Fritz's potential path to his first career grand slam even more arduous. He's already advanced further at the French than ever before, and things will get significantly harder for him as he continues down unchartered territory.

Emma Navarro (+5000)

In just her second French Open, the Charleston, South Carolina native, who won the Hobart International earlier this year, beat fellow American Madison Keys to advance to the Round of 16, where Aryna Sabalenka awaits. Navarro defeated the two-time Australian Open winner at Indian Wells earlier this year, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2, in their first career meeting.

Tennis Abstract's Jeff Sackmann wrote an insightful post on Navarro's upset, noting her "clutch defense" on her five break points.

"She also returned every serve at 15-30, three of four at 30-30, and both at deuce," wrote Sackmann.

His data revealed Navarro returned 18 of 22 Sabalenka serves (81.2%) when "Navarro had already won two points in the game," a sign the burgeoning talent knows how to keep pressure on her opponents when she senses they're in danger.

Coco Gauff (+850)

Gauff is in the conversation for the second-best player on the tour, but her problem is that she's on a collision course with world No. 1 Iga Swiatek in the semifinals — if she gets past eighth-ranked Ons Jabeur first.

Gauff and Jabeur have split their four most recent meetings, including a 2021 Round of 16 match at Roland-Garros, which Gauff won in straight sets. However, if Monday's match follows the pattern set by the previous four, that's a positive sign for Jabeur, as Gauff won their last meeting in the first round of the 2023 WTA Finals.

Per Tennis Abstract, Gauff is second to Swiatek on the WTA Tour this year in the percentage of total points (53.9%), games (59.2%), sets (72%) and matches (77.9%) won. Should both advance to Thursday's semifinal, that match could essentially determine the French Open.
