Luka Doncic trying to replicate a feat not achieved since 2000

Recent history suggests that winning the NBA scoring title doesn't equate to postseason success. Four of the last five scoring champions — Joel Embiid (2x), Stephen Curry and James Harden (2x) — were ousted in the second round and the 2021 winner, Curry, didn't even make the playoffs.

Luka Doncic is trying to shatter that mold.

Doncic, who averaged 33.9 points in 70 regular-season games, is trying to become the first NBA scoring champion since Shaquille O'Neal in 2000 to hoist the Larry O'Brien Trophy.

The previous five scoring champions to go the distance?

Besides O'Neal in 2000, Michael Jordan 6x (1991, 1992, 1993, 1996, 1997, 1998), Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (1971), Wilt Chamberlain (1966) and George Mikan 2x (1949, 1950) went on to win it all. Curry would have joined the club in 2016 if his Warriors had not choked away a 3-1 NBA Finals lead to the Cavaliers.

Doncic would join some elite company if he were to capture his first NBA title over the next few weeks. It's why Jason Kidd, the head coach of the Mavericks, realizes he's coaching a generational talent, and does not plan to take Doncic's extraordinary talents for granted.

"You can't take someone so great for granted. A lot of times that's what we do," Kidd said of Doncic ahead of the finals."

Kidd previously argued that Doncic, 25, was already in the 'same atmosphere' as Jordan, Kobe Bryant and LeBron James. If Doncic completes the mission against the Celtics, it'd be hard to argue with him.
