Watch: Austin Cindric wins at Gateway after Ryan Blaney runs out of fuel on final lap

The NASCAR Cup Series saw a wild, unpredictable finish in Sunday's Enjoy Illinois 300 at World Wide Technology Raceway, after race leader Ryan Blaney ran out of gas on the final lap.

Fellow Team Penske driver Austin Cindric took advantage, collecting his second career win.

It was an afternoon full of twists and turns, especially during the third and final stage of the race. Blaney had inherited the lead following the last round of pit stops, but a hard-charging Christopher Bell ran him down and caught him on fresher tires — before Bell's engine started to go sour.

Bell limped home to a seventh-place finish, while Blaney re-assumed command of the lead and appeared to have the race in the bag. However, that all changed in turn four coming to the white flag.

Suffice to say it was a mixed bag of emotions for the two Penske teammates. For Cindric, it was jubilation as he earned his first Cup Series win since the 2022 Daytona 500. For Blaney, it was dejection as the defending series champion remains winless in 2024.

Denny Hamlin finished second behind Cindric, followed by Brad Keselowski, Tyler Reddick and Joey Logano in the top five. Austin Dillon earned his best result of the season in sixth just ahead of Bell, while Carson Hocevar and Justin Haley collected impressive top-10s in eighth and ninth, respectively. Kyle Larson rebounded from a mid-race spin to come home 10th.

The Cup Series will now head to Sonoma Raceway in Northern California for next Sunday's Toyota/Save Mart 350.
