Steelers DT Cameron Heyward reveals why he ended his holdout

Steelers defensive tackle Cameron Heyward ended his holdout on Tuesday after not attending practices for the first two weeks of the voluntary offseason program.

Heyward revealed that although there have been conversations about a contract extension heading into the final year of his deal, nothing is imminent.

"There's been communication but there's nothing really to report on right now," Heyward said. "I don't think a deal gets done tomorrow, I'll tell you that."

So why did the long-time team captain decide to return?

"I was communicating with guys left and right, front office, coaches, teammates. All I care about is how I'm with my teammates. I don't want them to ever think I don't care about them or how I'm not in," Heyward added. "You gotta make sure guys know that you still care, that you want to be a part of this."

Heyward, who is heading into his 14th season in the league, knows better than anyone how important attendance is this time of year. This is yet another testament of him putting the team first.

He also wants to continue being a leader Pittsburgh's younger players can rely on. That is, of course, easier in person.

"Whether it's on the field, off the field, communication, dinners, just letting them know I'm available for them," he said. "I've been doing it for 13 years. It's crazy I'm still doing it."

Heyward reiterated that his return to the team does not change that fact he wants a new deal, but that being back with his teammates is what is best for him and the Steelers' long-term goals in 2024.

"Last week of OTAs and then we go into minicamp," Heyward concluded. "I've been busting my tail, but I thought it was important for me to come back. My job is to be the best player and leader I can."

If the 2024 season is Heyward's last year in the black and gold, he's going to do it his way and continue being a great teammate and leader along the way.
