Steelers expected to reunite with veteran cornerback

The Steelers needed of a starting-caliber slot cornerback, and it looks like they addressed that need on Wednesday by reuniting with a familiar face.

According to Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the Steelers are meeting with cornerback Cameron Sutton and are expected to sign him to a one-year deal for the veteran minimum.

Sutton is an instant upgrade at the position with lesser-experienced cornerbacks Josiah Scott, Anthony Averett and Beanie Bishop currently battling for the job.

The 29-year-old, who was a third-round pick by Pittsburgh in 2017, has registered 233 tackles, two sacks, six forced fumbles, nine interceptions and 44 passes defensed in his career.

However, Sutton comes at a bit of a risk after being charged with misdemeanor battery this offseason. He turned himself in to the Hillsborough (Fla.) County Sheriff's Office on March 31 after being wanted for weeks by police.

The Steelers have reportedly stayed in contact with Sutton, who entered a pretrial diversion program to resolve his domestic violence case in April.

The news came as a surprise to those in the Steelers organization since Sutton was always viewed as a "good locker room guy" during his six years with the team.

If Pittsburgh believes his legal issues are in the past, it makes a ton of sense to reunite with him at a cheap price.

Sutton provides great depth in the secondary while being more than capable of playing the slot cornerback role, which is where he's had the most success in his career.

He spent the 2023 season with the Lions after signing a three-year, $33 million contract with them last offseason and was productive, appearing in all 17 games. Detroit released him in March after the arrest warrant was issued.
