In possibly the biggest matchup yet in his young career, Pittsburgh Pirates rookie starter Paul Skenes is already rising to the occasion. In a clash with the NL-favorite Dodgers, Skenes fanned reigning AL MVP Shohei Ohtani on three straight 100-plus mile per hour fastballs, all of which induced swings and misses. Check out the tape right here.

As you can see in the above clip, the home crowd in Pittsburgh was absolutely loving it as their young star put on yet another show. We've seen plenty of good hitters fall victim to Skenes already, but it's just a bit different to watch one quite as accomplished and masterful as Ohtani join the club. The three-pitch strikeout of Ohtani was the second punchout of a very impressive opening frame for Skenes. He struck out another former MVP (Mookie Betts on four pitches to lead off the game, and then garnered a flyout from yet another former MVP, Freddie Freeman, to sit the side down in order.
Skenes may not have started the year in the majors, but he's already establishing himself as a serious candidate for NL Rookie of the Year. If he keeps shredding through superstar lineups like the one Los Angeles is trotting out, that accolade and plenty more should be in both his near and long-term future.
