Christian Yelich gets honest about Brewers after being swept by Phillies

Though they got swept and the streak came to an end, the Brewers still sit atop the NL Central, and they were able to learn and discover things as a team.

“I think we can definitely play with anybody; I think we’ve shown that,” Christian Yelich said per Mark Feinsand of MLB.com. “But there’s a difference between playing with somebody and beating them.”

Yelich is batting .309 with six home runs, 27 RBI and an OPS of .904. He’s looked more like the player he was in 2018 and 2019 before he suffered a knee injury that in a way started a downfall for him.

In an offense that has been hot this season, it was rather disappointing to see the Brewers be held to two runs over three games by a dominant Phillies rotation that has Aaron Nola, Cristopher Sanchez and Zack Wheeler. Yelich said that the team just needs to continue to improve themselves, not create any bad habits.

“We didn’t get blown out of the water by any means, but we also didn’t do a good enough job at the things that we’ve been good and we need to continue to be good at,” Yelich said. “That’s going to happen. We just can’t make it a habit or a trend.”

Milwaukee had plenty of opportunities to capitalize on offensive moments, but with a pitching rotation like the Phillies’, it was going to be difficult. As Yelich said, while they didn’t get blown out of the water, they need to start to capitalize on opportunities when they present themselves.

“Especially when you run up against a good team with really good pitching, you’re not going to get a lot of opportunities,” Yelich said. “When you do get opportunities, you need to capitalize on them and make the most. We didn’t really do that.”

Even with the sweep, the Brewers are in first in the NL Central with a 36-26 record while the Chicago Cubs sit behind them in second at 31-31 following two wins against the Chicago White Sox.
