Lakers would be wise to fast-track hiring Dan Hurley

The Los Angeles Lakers are reportedly closing in on hiring Dan Hurley for their vacant head-coaching job. The back-to-back NCAA championship-winning coach is reportedly interested in jumping to the NBA. ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski has reported mutual interest from both sides.

During a recent appearance on ESPN's "NBA Today," Wojnarowski revealed that Rob Pelinka is expected to move quickly to secure Hurley's services.

"I think the timeline moves relatively quickly," Wojnarowski said. "Whether that's the weekend or early next week. I don't think this is going to linger...The Lakers, who at some point here, have to get on with their search. They have been focused on Dan Hurley from the beginning...They see Dan Hurley as a coach who can be there a long time and put in place a program, and give him a lot of voice about what it's gonna look like."

Following the news that Hurley would consider an NBA job becoming public, the Lakers will certainly want to wrap up their negotiations quickly. Hurley will have multiple interested suitors from around the league. Some of those opportunities would likely come without the pressure of coaching in Los Angeles.

Nevertheless, the opportunity to instill a program and work toward long-term success in a major market like Los Angeles is rare. Hurley may be drawn to working on a project with one of the league's most storied franchises. He's proved himself capable of creating a winning culture and developing young talent.

Hurley's emergence as a coaching candidate for Los Angeles will undoubtedly come as a surprise to its fan base. Still, he already projects as the best coach for the job. Other teams may feel the same way. The quicker Pelinka can get Hurley's signature onto a contract, the quicker this saga can be put to bed, and the Lakers can begin building for next season.
