Joey Logano wins pole for NASCAR Cup Series race at Sonoma

Despite his struggles throughout much of the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series season, Joey Logano is finally turning up the wick.

Logano won the pole for Sunday's Toyota/Save Mart 350 over 23XI Racing driver Tyler Reddick, who bumped Logano's teammate, Ryan Blaney, off the front row in the closing moments of qualifying.

For Logano, a win could save a season that has not gone to plan for the No. 22 team. Logano comes into the weekend 18th in NASCAR's playoff standings, 14 points out of the postseason. With a win locking you into the NASCAR playoffs, all it takes is one good weekend to change the outlook of a season.

The aforementioned Blaney will start third in Sunday's race in an attempt to avenge his heartbreaking defeat at St. Louis one week ago. Road-course ace Chase Elliott will start fourth as the highest-starting Hendrick Motorsports car, with all four HMS cars cracking the final round of qualifying.

Kyle Larson, who damaged his car on his initial qualifying run, was able to go out for one final lap as the session wound down. Despite heavy damage to the left-rear of Larson's No. 5 Camaro, he still managed to put his car fifth on the grid for Sunday's race. It is currently unknown whether or not Larson will need to go to a backup car for the race, as he would be relegated to a last-place start if a backup is needed.

COTA winner William Byron qualified sixth, with 2022 Sonoma winner Daniel Suarez qualifying seventh. Suarez's seventh-place start on Sunday is easily his best qualifying effort of 2024, with a previous best start on the season of 13th at the Daytona 500.

While he was the worst of the Hendrick Motorsports cars, Alex Bowman still qualified eighth, getting loose on his final run and nearly hitting the same wall that damaged Larson's left-rear. Ross Chastain, teammate of Suarez at Trackhouse Racing, qualified ninth, while Ty Gibbs, who will start second in Saturday's NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Sonoma qualified 10th.

Other notable qualifying results include road-course ringer AJ Allmendinger in 11th, 2023 Sonoma winner Martin Truex Jr. in 21st, St. Louis winner Austin Cindric in 28th and Australian Supercar regulars Will Brown and Cam Waters in 24th and 31st, respectively. Legacy Motor Club drivers John Hunter Nemechek and Erik Jones will make up the last row, starting 37th and 38th.

The Toyota/Save Mart 350 will go green at 3:30 p.m. ET on Sunday. The race will air on Fox, PRN and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio.
