Growing up, Carlos Alcaraz admired Rafael Nadal and other Spanish champions. Now, he's following in their footsteps.
On Sunday at Roland Garros, No. 3 seed Alcaraz defeated No. 4 seed Alexander Zverev 6-3, 2-6, 5-7, 6-1, 6-2 in four hours and 19 minutes, clinching his first French Open title.
The 21-year-old is now the youngest player to win a title on all three surfaces (clay, grass and hard). Nadal previously held this record.

Before the final, Alcaraz acknowledged that winning the French Open would be a bit sweeter.
"I have a special feeling to this tournament because I remember when I finished school, I'm running to my home just to put the TV on and watch the matches here in the French Open," Alcaraz said, per Forbes contributor Adam Zagoria. "And I wanted to put my name on that list of the Spanish players who won this tournament. Not only Rafa, but Ferrero, Moya, Costa, a lot of Spanish legends that won this tournament."
Following this match, Alcaraz will become the No. 2 ranked player in the world behind Jannik Sinner. However, don't be surprised if he eventually leapfrogs Sinner. As of Sunday, FanDuel gives him the best odds (+135) to repeat as Wimbledon champion.
Per Liam Grace of Metro, Alcaraz has also become the youngest man to win his first three major finals. Considering his trajectory, it's fair to wonder whether he'll match or surpass Nadal, who has won 22 Grand Slam titles.
