Clippers' hardball approach to Paul George negotiations could backfire

Paul George has a player option on his contract for next season, and he is expected to decline that option and enter free agency. The Los Angeles Clippers are reportedly keen on extending George's stay with the franchise, but no agreement has been made.

According to Marc Stein, the Clippers' slow-paced negotiations could be a sign that they want to control the price point at which George remains with the franchise.

"The Clippers certainly hope to retain George in free agency, but they’ve made it clear by letting negotiations drag out to this point that they want to do it at their price," Stein reported. "NBA free agency, again, officially opens on June 30 at 6 PM ET ... three weeks from today. The Clippers have the rest of the month to come to terms with George on an extension that would prevent him from becoming a free agent."

The Clippers aren't the only team interested in having George on their roster next season. The Philadelphia 76ers and Orlando Magic are both rumored to have interest in the veteran forward.

As such, the Clippers risk losing one of their star players by dragging their heels on getting an extension sorted out.

George played in 74 regular season games for the Clippers this season. He averaged 22.6 points, 5.2 rebounds and 3.5 assists while shooting 47.1% from the field and 41.3% from three-point range. He is clearly still an elite forward in the NBA despite nearing his mid-30s.

Nevertheless, the Clippers are wise to want to control George's earning potential with the franchise. Outside of this season, he has struggled to remain healthy during his tenure in Los Angeles.

This is the first season since joining the Clippers in 2019 that George has played more than 56 games. Other interested parties will also be aware of his injury history.

Steve Ballmer is the wealthiest owner in the NBA. He can afford the hefty luxury tax bill from constructing a contending team in the Western Conference. However, he won't want to continue paying injury-riddled stars.

George will undoubtedly have to take a pay cut on his next contract. If he doesn't, the Clippers would be wise to let him walk away.
