Arthur Smith: Steelers are 'perfect fit' thanks to egoless attitude

The Steelers needed to make a splash at offensive coordinator after averaging the fifth-least points per game (17.9) in the league last season. They hope they did that by signing former Falcons head coach Arthur Smith this offseason.

While early glowing reviews from Pittsburgh's offensive players hint it could be a perfect match, going from being a head coach back to a coordinator may not be the ideal scenario.

Luckily, Smith feels otherwise.

"It's not (tough) if you don't have an ego or aren't insecure," Smith said. "I couldn't have asked for a better situation. Just studying Mike (Tomlin) and the Steelers and what they're about, I feel like it's a perfect fit."

Of course, only time will tell if Smith's offense is a perfect fit for what the Steelers are hoping to accomplish this season, but Tomlin likes what he's seen thus far.

"I just like the energy that he brings, the competitive spirit that he brings. It creates a really good environment," Tomlin said. "He's doing a really good job of selling his system of football to the players."

Part of Smith's job will be deciding who will run his offense. Pittsburgh has two capable quarterbacks in Russell Wilson and Justin Fields, who will battle it out this summer.

Wilson, who has the "pole position" to be the Steelers starter, believes his relationship with Smith is already off to a great start.

"It's been great, Wilson said. "I think the best thing about our relationship is his knowledge of the game and how he's communicating. I think that part's always key."

There's no hiding the fact that Pittsburgh wants to run the ball early and often this season, and Smith's offenses in the past fit the bill.

If it does turn out to be the perfect fit, the Steelers could finally get back to winning in the playoffs, while Smith may get another shot at being a head coach in a few years.
