Olympics Day 12 briefing: Historic day on the track for Team USA, chance at redemption in women's soccer

Team USA easily downed Brazil in men's basketball Tuesday 122-87. Devin Booker led the team in scoring with 18 points as the U.S. now advances to face Serbia in the semifinals. The women's team plays Nigeria in its quarterfinal match Wednesday, looking to win its 59th straight game.

The U.S. women's indoor volleyball team defeated Poland Tuesday in straight sets to reach the semifinals. But on the sand, American's Sara Hughes and Kelly Cheng lost their quarterfinal match in straight sets to the Swiss team, eliminating them from the Olympic women's beach volleyball tournament. That means it will be the first time since the 2000 Sydney Games that there will be no American team on the podium in that event.

1. Americans win historic medals in 1500-meter upset

Cole Hocker made an epic dash in the home stretch of the men's 1500m to win gold and break the Olympic record Tuesday. His teammate Yared Nuguse won bronze making it the first time in 112 years that Team USA has won two medals in this event. Great Britain's Josh Kerr won silver, and the Tokyo gold medalist, Norway's Jakob Ingebrigtsen, shockingly missed out on the podium in fourth.

2. Sophia Smith downs Germany in extra time to save USWNT's gold medal hopes

The USWNT defeated Germany 1-0 Tuesday, needing extra time to do it, to advance to the gold-medal match on Saturday against Brazil. Sophia Smith chipped the goalkeeper early in the first half of extra time off a well-placed assist from Mallory Swanson for the decisive goal. This will be the first time since 2012 that the U.S. will appear in an Olympic soccer gold-medal match.

3. Youngest American female wrestler extends winning streak with Olympic gold

Amit Elor, the youngest American woman to compete in Greco-Roman wrestling at the Olympics, won gold in the women's 68kg final Tuesday — making her the youngest American woman to win Olympic wrestling gold. Elor's win adds to an impressive winning streak of hers that spans the last five years of senior competition.

Cuba's Mijain Lopez won his fifth straight gold medal in Greco-Roman wrestling Tuesday, becoming the first athlete to ever win gold in the same event at five different Games. The 41-year-old dominated the 130kg category, defeating his Chilean opponent who is five years younger than him. Lopez, now the oldest Olympic wrestling medalist in history, said before the Paris Games that he would retire once the competition finished.
