Why did the U.S. Olympic figure skating team get medals at the Summer Games?

It's been more than two years since the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, China, but in the hot Parisian sun Wednesday, the U.S. Olympic figure skating team received its gold medals.

Team USA originally finished in second place during the 2022 Olympic figure skating competition behind the Russians. But shortly after the competition, it was revealed one of the Russian skaters — Kamila Valieva — had tested positive for a banned performance-enhancing drug prior to the Beijing Games.

After an investigation, the Russian teenager was subsequently disqualified and banned for four years from the sport, resulting in the U.S. being elevated to gold-medal position.

The American skaters are only receiving their medals now at the Paris Games because the long, drawn out legal battle over Valieva's ban and disqualification only just wrapped up last month.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport upheld the decision, allowing the International Olympic Committee to officially re-award the medals for the team ice skating competition.

Japan's team, which had finished third in 2022, was also present in Paris to receive silver medals. But Russia, which was bumped down to the bronze medal position after Valieva's scores were nullified, did not appear at the medal ceremony.
