Olympics Day 13 briefing: Men's water-polo drama, U.S. runner's late surge and ice-skating medals?

With four days remaining until the closing ceremony in Paris, Team USA is still racking up the medals. Here's the latest from Wednesday's Olympic action.

Team USA men's water polo defeated Australia 11-10 in dramatic fashion, needing a shootout to put away the game. Australia was already three men short due to COVID-19. The U.S. team had to survive an early ejection and required a last minute equalizer to keep their gold-medal hopes alive. The Americans will play Serbia in the semifinals Friday.

Back on dry land, Tom Schaar won silver for Team USA in the men's skateboarding park final to cap off a masterful Olympic debut. Australia's Keegan Palmer and Brazil's Augusto Akio won the gold and bronze medals, respectively, to take the podium along with Schaar.

Making history for Team USA, meanwhile, was Hampton Morris, who won bronze in the 61kg category for weightlifting, the first U.S. medal in the sport in 40 years. And Sarah Ann Hildebrant made an epic comeback to snag gold in the women's 50kg freestyle-wrestling final.

American Katie Moon won silver in the women's pole vault. She was attempting to repeat her gold medal performance from the Tokyo Games but came up just short on the 4.95m height. Australian Nina Kennedy won gold and Canada's Alysha Newman took bronze.

Team USA women's cycling also won gold in the team pursuit final. It helped Kristen Faulkner continue a dominant Olympic debut in the City of Light, taking home her second gold of the Paris Games after earlier winning the women's road event.

Three big things about Team USA

1. Quincy Hall makes late surge to take 400-meter gold

American runner Quincy Hall made a late surge Wednesday to win the men's 400m race. Hall was in fourth heading into the home stretch and passed the leaders at the last moment to win the gold medal by .04 seconds.

2. Artistic swimming ends 20-year medal drought

Team USA's artistic swimming team, formerly known as synchronized swimming, won the silver medal Wednesday — the best result for the Americans in the event since 1996 and ending a 20-year medal drought. China took the gold and Spain the bronze medal.

3. Women's basketball marches on to semifinals

The American women's basketball team easily dispatched Nigeria 88-74 to advance to the semifinals against Australia on Friday. A'ja Wilson led the team in scoring with 20 points. The victory was Team USA's 59th straight at the Olympics. Nigeria was the first African team to ever qualify for the Olympic knockout rounds.

You won't believe this

More than two years later, Team USA's figure skating team received its gold medals in Paris — after originally finishing in second place at the 2022 Beijing Winter Games. It comes as a result of the then gold medal-winning Russian team dropping into third place after an investigation revealed one of its skaters, Kamila Valieva, tested positive for performance-enhancers prior to the Games — resulting in her disqualification. The U.S. skaters are only getting their medals in Paris now because a long, drawn out legal battle wrapped up last month when the Court of Arbitration for Sport upheld a four-year ban for Valieva and her Beijing disqualification.
