Noah Lyles pulls out of Paris Olympics due to COVID-19

The news of the day in Paris on Thursday was American runner Noah Lyles revealing he ran the men's 200m final while infected with COVID-19.

Now, Lyles has given an update on his condition — announcing in an Instagram post that his 2024 Olympics are over. He was slated to anchor the men's 4x100m relay on Friday.

Lyles finished the 200m race in third, earning the bronze medal for Team USA but was visibly struggling to breath after crossing the finish line. He eventually needed medical assistance to get off the track.

His mother confirmed to NBC Sports correspondent Lewis Johnson that Lyles was diagnosed with the virus on Tuesday, two days after he won gold in the 100m final.

Lyles then told Johnson on air that he never considered dropping out of Thursday's race.

"My first thought was not to panic," Lyles said. "I've been in worse situations, I've run with, you know, worse conditions I felt and we just took it day by day."

The 27-year-old's next chance at Olympic glory would be in Los Angeles in 2028 but he hasn't given an indication yet as to whether he's interested in competing again on this stage.
