Watch: U.S. women win 4x100m relay, men's medal-less streak continues

The U.S. won gold in the women's event for the first time since the 2016 Rio Games.

The American men had less luck in their race.

On the first baton exchange, Christian Coleman struggled to hand off to Kenny Bednarek, who appeared to take off too early and overran the legal hand-off zone.

The poor exchange resulted in the relay being disqualified and the U.S. continuing a medal-less streak that stretches back to the 2008 Beijing Games.

Canada won its first gold in the event since 1996; South Africa claimed silver — its first Olympic medal ever — and Great Britain earned bronze.

Every time the U.S. men have run in this event since 2004, the last time it medaled, there has been some mishap involving the baton hand-off at some point. However, at the 2012 London Games, they were stripped of their silver medals for Tyson Gay's doping violation.

This is the second in-race disqualification for the relay in that span. It was eliminated in the prelims at the Tokyo Games.
