USWNT is in gold-medal match because of this key player

The United States women’s national team looks to bring home its fifth Olympic gold medal on Saturday when it faces Brazil at 11 a.m. ET.

The squad’s goal-scoring trio has taken the tournament and headlines by storm, scoring nine of its side’s 11 goals.

However, the Americans find themselves in the final because of their defensive superstar.

Naomi Girma is only 24 years old, yet dominates the field in and out of possession like a seasoned veteran. Head coach Emma Hayes gave her extremely high praise after the semifinal match versus Germany.

The group-stage games were generally comfortable for the United States’ defense, winning by an average of over two goals per game.

However, both the quarterfinal game versus Japan and the semifinal versus Germany were 1-0 extra-time victories with a razor-thin margin of error.

As the team struggled to break lines versus Japan, Girma’s composure on the ball exuded the confidence and patience needed to dismantle the opponent’s low block.

Girma’s defensive presence coupled with her creation in possession is pivotal for the Americans’ success. Few, if any, center backs in the world excel in that duality like her.

Former USWNT forward and World Cup champion Sydney Leroux also went to social media to give Girma her flowers.

After scoring four goals against Spain in the semifinal, Brazil is growing in confidence offensively. It appears the USWNT’s Olympic final opponent will force one last world-class defensive shift from Girma if the Americans want to stand on top of the podium.
