France was inches away from forcing OT against Team USA

France came just inches away from forcing overtime against Team USA in the gold-medal game of the women’s Olympic basketball tournament on Sunday.

Team USA beat France 67-66 in Paris to win a record eighth consecutive Olympic gold medal. The Americans were leading 65-61 when Gabby Williams hit a three-pointer for France to cut the lead to 65-64 with 4.9 seconds remaining. France then quickly fouled, and Kahleah Copper made both of her free throws to give Team USA a 67-64 lead.

On the ensuing possession, Williams got a shot off just before the final buzzer sounded. The basket was good, but Williams was just inside the three-point line when she let the ball go. That ended the game at 67-66.

Team USA trailed for much of the game but finally put things together in the fourth quarter. Had Williams let her buzzer-beater go a fraction of a second sooner, the outcome may have been different.

Yankees Announce Paul Goldschmidt News After Loss to Twins

The New York Yankees won their first series of August in a three-game set against the Minnesota Twins from Monday to Wednesday, but they're still in trouble. They're only one game ahead of the Cleveland Guardians for the third and final AL Wild Card spot with six weeks left in the regular season. The Yankees beat the Twins 6-2 on Monday and 9-1 on Tuesday before losing 4-1 on Wednesday, but Tuesday's victory came at a price. First baseman Paul Goldschmidt left early and didn't play on Wednesday, a night in which New York especially needed his bat. The Yankees released an update on Goldschmidt after Wednesday night's game, via MLB.com's Bryan Hoch. The 37-year-old has a low-grade knee sprain with inflammation. He's slashing .276/.331/.422 with 10 homers and 40 RBI over 112 games. Fellow first baseman Ben Rice went 1-for-4 in Goldshmidt's stead on Wednesday. The 26-year-old is slashing .233/.326/.456 with 17 homers and 38 RBI over 101 contests. Paul Goldschmidt comments on injury Goldschmidt said that he hopes he can avoid the IL with a "short-term" absence, via Hoch. While Rice is a high-upside player in his second year, the seven-time All-Star is still a more dependable contact hitter at this point. Goldschmidt is third on the squad with 110 hits, although his younger counterpart's OPS is 30 points higher. The Yankees need the veteran back as soon as possible to help them maintain their Wild Card spot. His presence allows Rice to play catcher, which is optimal given Austin Wells's struggles. The 26-year-old is slashing just .206/.264/.408 with 15 homers and 56 RBI over 94 games. Up next for New York is a road series against the St. Louis Cardinals, Goldschmidt's former team.

Milwaukee Brewers outfield will be without two key contributors against Cincinnati Reds

The Milwaukee Brewers are set to head into a pivotal 19-game-in-18-day stretch short-handed as they open their series against the Cincinnati Reds. While no official announcement has been made, it was previously reported that outfielder Isaac Collins would miss the series for the birth of his child. Now, it appears Blake Perkins may also be unavailable. Outfielder Blake Perkins may be unavailable against the Cincinnati Reds Per Blake Perkin’s MLB transaction page, he was placed on the bereavement list on Aug. 14. The bereavement list is a temporary roster designation that allows a player to take time off due to a death or serious illness in their immediate family. The organization hasn't commented on the situation. Tyler Black and Steward Berroa have been called up by the Milwaukee Brewers With Collins and Perkins unavailable against the Reds, veteran reporter Francys Romero indicated that Tyler Black and Steward Berroa were called up to the big leagues. Black is primarily an infielder, whereas Berroa is a speedy outfielder who could make an impact over the weekend series, especially with Jackson Chourio still sidelined with a hamstring injury.

Red Sox should consider adding former World Series champion 1B

Since Boston Red Sox first baseman Triston Casas was lost for the season with a knee injury in early May, the combo of Abraham Toro and Romy Gonzalez has held down the position in Boston. Gonzalez, in particular, has consistently produced offensively, posting a .305 batting average and .893 OPS across 63 games entering Thursday. He's especially seen lefties well, slashing .357/.407/.673 with six homers across 108 plate appearances against southpaws. Toro has been serviceable, at best, with a .689 OPS batting from both sides of the plate. Luckily, a former World Series champion suddenly became available on Thursday and could be a formidable platoon partner with Gonzalez. The Washington Nationals surprisingly designated first baseman Nathaniel Lowe for assignment on Thursday, despite launching a grand slam less than 24 hours before in a win against the Kansas City Royals on Wednesday. The Nationals traded for Lowe in December, bringing an experienced voice, a former Gold Glove winner and a postseason veteran to the young club. Lowe has been fairly productive overall this season, popping 16 home runs and driving in 68 runs, both second on the Nationals, over 119 games. Still, thanks in large part to a dreadful second-half slump, his batting average has sunk to a career-worst .216, and he has struck out at a 26.5% rate. Despite being mired in a slump since the All-Star break, Lowe's career resume should take precedent in any evaluation by the Red Sox. During his four seasons with the Texas Rangers, Lowe earned a Silver Slugger award in 2022 before playing a key role in their first World Series title in franchise history in 2023. Since debuting in 2019, Lowe has hit .264 while averaging 20 homers, 25 doubles and 80 RBI per 162 games. He could be a real asset in the Red Sox's lineup as they make a playoff push. Boston holds the second American League wild-card spot with a 66-56 record.

Amon-Ra St. Brown admits Lions offense is in a bad place

The Detroit Lions led the NFL in points per game (33.2), total points (564) and were second in yards per game and total yards last season. Their core offensive players will all be back, but offensive coordinator Ben Johnson won't. Of course, it will take some time to adjust to life without one of the most creative offensive architects in the game. And according to star WR Amon-Ra St. Brown, they're still not quite there yet. "We feel like as an offense maybe this camp there has been some struggles for us as an offense," St. Brown told the team's website. "But I think that's normal. You got new coaches and different moving parts and you're going against a really good defense every day." Then again, with the myriad of offensive weapons they have, the All-Pro wide receiver still thinks they can do something special. "Things can get tough. But for us as an offense, we know the ability that we have, the playmakers we have, the quarterback we have, the O-line, so it's just a matter of time for us. Keep getting better and improving is the name of the game for us right now," St. Brown added. The Lions lost both of their primary assistants to head-coaching positions this offseason. Still, this team should continue to boast the same aggressive, all-in identity that head coach Dan Campbell has instilled. And with weapons like St. Brown, Jahmyr Gibbs, Jameson Williams and Sam LaPorta, it shouldn't take long before they pick up things right where they left them last season.
