Kirby Smart won't commit to QB2, but he's happy with Georgia's depth chart

We know Carson Beck is "the guy" for the Georgia Bulldogs at quarterback.

He threw for 3,941 yards and 24 touchdowns last season and is the preseason Heisman Trophy favorite for 2024. Outside of major injury, there was no world in which Beck entered Week 1 against No. 14 Clemson as anything but the starter.

The depth chart behind Beck is a bit questionable, though. Not the potential talent, of course. Redshirt sophomore Gunner Stockton is a former highly-ranked recruit who appeared in four games last season as a backup. Redshirt freshman Jaden Rashada and true freshman Ryan Puglisi both also have a ton of potential.

What's questionable is the order behind Beck.

Stockton was seen as the likely No. 2 quarterback heading into spring ball but Rashada's transfer from Arizona State threw some competition into the mix. Notably, when asked about the quarterback depth chart on Tuesday and specifically about Stockton being the backup, head coach Kirby Smart wouldn't commit to it.

“You know, we have a group of quarterbacks that have done a great job,” Smart told the media (h/t On3). “I think we’ve got depth at the quarterback position that we’re not used to having in terms of guys that have experience. Some guys that are young, some guys have played like Gunner and Jaden. They’ve done a tremendous job."

While that's not a ringing endorsement for Stockton as the No. 2 on the depth chart, that didn't stop Smart from speaking highly of the redshirt sophomore.

“Gunner has had two of his better scrimmages and probably his best scrimmage since being here in the last one,” Smart said.

The smart money (pun intended) would be on Stockton getting the No. 2 role, but at this point, nobody would be surprised if Rashada quickly rose up the depth chart. Either way, the head coach is happy with the room he has.

“I’m really pleased with where all those guys are,” said Smart
