World No. 2 blasts pay disparity between men and women

World No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka believes men and women should be compensated equally in tennis.

The Belarusian star brought up the pay disparity after clinching the Cincinnati Open this week, for which she was paid exactly half of the $1,049,460 prize money claimed by the men's champion, Jannik Sinner.

"From the TV point of view, from the ticket selling, from every point of view, it's unfair," Sabalenka told The Guardian on Wednesday. "Of course, guys are always going to be physically stronger than women but it doesn't mean we're not working as hard as they do. Women deserve to be paid an equal amount of money that men do."

Sabalenka makes a valid point since the Cincinnati Open, like any ATP 1000, is a tournament where men and women play best-of-three set matches, unlike majors where men battle it out in five-setters.

The organizers of the Cincinnati Open also faced backlash for the pay disparity in the doubles events, which saw the men's winners Marcelo Arevalo and Mate Pavic ($322,000) netting more than twice their female counterparts, Asia Muhammed and Erin Routliffe ($154,000), for their respective victories.

The backlash was so severe that the organizers issued a statement justifying the pay gap while expressing their commitment to achieving parity in prize money by 2027.

"Equal prize money is extremely important to us, and we are actively working toward achieving that goal," read the official statement. "The economic reality is prize money levels are based upon the amount of broadcast, data, and sponsorship revenues that are received, with the market currently paying a much higher fee for the rights associated with men's sports properties than that of women, thus the difference in prize money."

Luckily for Sabalenka and other female players, the pay disparity won't be an issue at the upcoming U.S. Open, where both genders are compensated equally for winning hardware. In fact, the U.S. Open was the first Grand Slam event to offer equal prize money in 1973, inspiring the organizers of the Australian Open, Wimbledon and French Open to follow in their footsteps in subsequent years.

Beyond the majors, however, the pay disparity remains a prevalent issue across ATP and WTA events. As an example, World No. 1 Iga Swiatek received $364,000 for winning the 2022 Italian Open, while Novak Djokovic netted $916,000 for the same event. That Djokovic got nearly three times the prize money became a contentious issue, forcing Italian Open organizers to guarantee equal prize money by 2025.

Mirra Andreeva suffers major blow ahead of U.S. Open

Mirra Andreeva suffers major blow ahead of U.S. Open

Russia’s Mirra Andreeva has suffered a major blow ahead of the Cincinnati Open. The 18-year-old recently featured at the Canadian Open, where she was knocked out after losing in the round of 32 to McCartney Kessler in straight sets with a score of 7-6, 6-4. In that contest, Andreeva suffered an ankle injury, which has now pushed her out of the upcoming Cincinnati Open. The WTA 1000 event is set to begin on Aug. 7, where some of the best players will participate to lift the title. It is not clear whether Andreeva will be able to gain full fitness for the fourth and final Grand Slam of the year, the U.S. Open, which will start from Aug. 24. The recent development comes as a severe blow in Andreeva’s hopes of having a good preparation for the US Open, especially after having a decent time during the same competition last year where she cemented a spot in the quarterfinal, only to lost to six-time Grand Slam winner Poland’s Iga Swiatek with a score of 4-6, 6-3, 7-5. On her way to the last eight, Andreeva defeated fifth-seed and two-time Grand Slam runner-up Jasmine Paolini in the round of 16 with a score of 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. Andreeva’s record at the US Open does not make for great reading as well, which means that even if she recovers in time, she will have a hard time improving her record while playing at the Flashing Meadows. It is the only Grand Slam where Andreeva has never got past the second round. Her best appearance came in the 2023 and 2024 editions, where on both occasions, she was knocked out after losing in the round of 64. Big setback That defeat ended Andreeva’s run of three consecutive quarterfinal appearances this season, in which she lost all three. At the French Open, Andreeva lost to France’s Lois Boisson in straight sets with a score of 7-6, 6-3. Then in Homburg, Andreeva came second-best in the last-eight contest to Linda Noskova in straight sets with a score of 6-3, 6-3. Her most recent defeat in the quarterfinals came at Wimbledon, where Switzerland’s Belinda Bencic came out on top in straight sets with a score of 7-6, 7-6. Even though the outing against Bencic did not go as planned, it was still Andreeva’s best performance while playing at Wimbledon. Talking after the defeat, Andreeva stated that she was keen to work on being more aggressive on the court and making fewer mistakes. “A little bit more focused, less mistakes and more aggressive,” she said in July while explaining her future goals. “Today is a hard day, but I can take a lot of positives from these two weeks, for sure. We’re going to move on and improve. The next practice I have, I’m going to try to focus on practicing on being aggressive, trying to step into the court when I play points, maybe play even more volleys, keep improving my serve and my returns. "There are plenty of things that Conchita has in mind. We are going to talk about it. We’re going to share our thoughts, and we’re going to go from there. When I’m on the court and something is not working and doesn’t go my way, I get frustrated because I want everything to be perfect. But we all know that perfection doesn’t exist, especially on the tennis court. I used to struggle a lot with this, not kind of forgiving myself for making a mistake or just putting the wrong shot in the court. Now I feel like it’s getting better. I feel like it can maybe bother me for, I don’t know, one, two points.”

Jalen Milroe surges past former NFL starter on first Seattle Seahawks depth chart

Despite being viewed as a potential first-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, former Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe ended up sliding into the third round. The 22-year-old — who was the starter for Alabama for two seasons — was selected with the No. 92 pick by the Seattle Seahawks. Although every player's dream is to go in the first round, Milroe likely couldn't have gone to a better situation. There is virtually no pressure on him as the Seahawks signed former Minnesota Vikings quarterback Sam Darnold to a three-year, $100.5 million contract this offseason, and they also have Drew Lock, who has started 28 career games on the roster as well. However, based on ESPN's initial depth chart, Milroe may be climbing the depth chart sooner than most expected. Seattle Seahawks depth chart As reported by ESPN, the Seahawks depth chart goes as follows: QB1: Sam Darnold QB2 Jalen Milroe QB3 Drew Lock If this truly ends up being the case, Milroe has taken major strides following his final season at Alabama. During his last year in Tuscaloosa, Milroe was criticized heavily for forcing passes into windows that weren't there after being late on reads. In his final season at Alabama, Milroe threw a career-high 11 interceptions to just 16 touchdowns, an increase of five more interceptions than he threw in 2023. Although training camp is still ongoing and the preseason games have yet to be played, clearly, Milroe is finding some success in the Pacific Northwest.

Jaydon Blue injury update: Major news emerges on Cowboys RB after Thursday practice exit

According to Nick Harris of The Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Dallas Cowboys running back Jaydon Blue suffered a bone bruise in his heel on Thursday. Blue was stepped on during practice, initially looking at an ankle sprain. Thankfully, the MRI came back with some positive news. “Cowboys RB Jaydon Blue’s MRI revealed a bone bruise in his heel after it was stepped on in today’s practice, according to a @startelegram source,” Harris said via X. “No ankle sprain. Good news for the young back who has emerged as an offensive playmaker in camp.” Blue previously told Harris that an ankle injury was what he suffered. Questions about the running back’s availability for Saturday’s preseason game against the Los Angeles Rams are now present. Something to watch as kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. CT from SoFi Stadium. Dallas took Blue in the fifth round of the 2025 NFL Draft, hoping to address its running back situation. Blue played his college ball inside the Lone Star State, suiting up for the Texas Longhorns. Plenty of guys at the position have come out of Austin and found quick success. Blue is hoping to be the next one. For now, there is an injury for him to deal with. No exact timeline has been provided per a report or by a team official. Hopefully, Blue is able to get things cleared up quickly and get his first taste of the NFL before Sept. 4’s season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles. More on Jaydon Blue, Cowboys running back situation Running back was a position the Cowboys needed to desperately figure out this offseason. Rico Dowdle, the team’s leading rusher, was no longer on the roster. Behind Dowdle, Dallas did not have much else. A nice mix of veteran presence and youngsters was needed. Javonte Williams and Miles Sanders provide the former, while Blue was a part of the draft class alongside Phil Mafah. A combination of those four figures to be on the opening night roster. Exactly how head coach Brian Schottenheimer splits up the carries is not yet known. Blue’s injury certainly does not help the situation. Cowboys players, in general, have been going down throughout training camp thus far. Making sure everyone is healthy will be critical heading into the season. Especially an explosive back like Blue, someone who can change the outcome of any game in just the snap of your fingers.

Tom Brady’s ‘incognito’ trip to analyze Raiders QBs, revealed

Tom Brady helping run the show for the Las Vegas Raiders can only benefit the franchise in the long term. According to Albert Breer, who covers the NFL for Sports Illustrated, said that Brady secretly made a trip to Las Vegas to discuss the future of the Raiders’ quarterbacks, RaidersBeat wrote. Brady is on record in May saying that he had no part in the evaluation process for the Raiders’ future signal callers. Although they may not be a true statement. “Even if [Brady] isn’t in there every day, and he’s very sensitive about that, and a story I heard [was] he helped with their quarterback evaluation because obviously, who wouldn’t want Tom [helping in a quarterback search]?” Breer said on the Rich Eisen Show on Wednesday. “So he flew in incognito for a day to sit down with the front office and the coaches to go through quarterbacks and look at quarterbacks on tape, and left, and no one knew about it,” Breer continued. “My understanding is the reason why is because he knows if he shows up, he takes all the oxygen out of the room. He knows if he shows up… he doesn’t’ want the perception out there… that he’s lording over everything. But he certainly has an influence of the types of players they are bringing in.” Geno Smith is the guy for now. He will debut as a Raider tonight on NFL Network as his first game for Las Vegas will be in his old stomping grounds, Seattle, as the Raiders and Seahawks battle it out for the first preseason game for both teams. The Raiders will be going with their starters to begin the game. It’s unclear how long Smith and his teammates will play, but head coach Pete Carroll wants to win. Carroll had a blunt message about his return to Seattle tonight.
