Golf best bets: Jack Dougherty's outright picks for the Tour Championship

The final week of the 2024 PGA Tour season has arrived. The top 30 remaining players in the FedEx Cup standings will congregate at East Lake Golf Club for the Tour Championship, but unlike the Super Bowl or the Stanley Cup Final, golf's final tournament is actually the worst betting event of the season.

For one, there are only 30 players in the field, and most of them have no chance of winning due to the staggered scoring system. Scottie Scheffler will begin the tournament with a two-shot lead at 10 under par, as if he needed an extra advantage the way he's been playing. With players at the top of the board so low-priced, the only way to play the Tour Championship is to target a few aggressive birdie-makers who won't be scared of chasing down the best player in the world.

Here are the two outright bets we're riding for the season finale.

Wyndham Clark (+4500 FanDuel)

Clark fits the mold we just laid out perfectly.

Aggressive? Definitely. Clark, who will begin the Tour Championship at -4 and six strokes behind Scheffler, ranks sixth on the PGA Tour this season in driving distance and 11th in going for the green percentage. He's going to bomb driver and fire at pins all week.

Elite birdie-maker? You bet. Clark ranks fifth on Tour in birdie or better percentage, third in total eagles, fifth in par breakers and second in final-round scoring average. He broke the course record at Pebble Beach earlier this year with a 12-under 60 in the third round, and he shot 68 or better in all four rounds at East Lake last season.

Scared of Scheffler? Not in the slightest. Clark fought off Scheffler to win the U.S. Open last year, and he battled against him a few times earlier this season.

Clark is coming off his best driver week of the season, and he's been on fire with the putter. These players will have to drain a ton of putts to catch Scheffler, and Clark is one of the best mid-to-long-range putters on Tour.

Sam Burns (+4500 FD)

Similarly to Clark, Burns is scorching hot with the putter right now. The American has gained a whopping 15.12 true strokes from putting over his last two starts, propelling him to T5 and T2 finishes in the first two legs of the FedEx Cup Playoffs. He's also gained 13.96 true strokes from putting in his three starts at East Lake, which makes sense considering Bermuda grass is his favorite surface. They don't call him Bermuda Burns for nothing.

Burns ranks second on Tour in birdie average, first in total eagles, second in par breakers and fourth in one-putt percentage. He's coming off a 7-under 65 in the final round of the BMW Championship, which was the best score of the day. Only two other players shot better than 68 on Sunday.

As for the Scheffler component, Burns isn't afraid of the World No. 1 because — well, he's his best friend. Burns took down Scheffler in the championship match of the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play last year, and he'll relish the opportunity to chase him down to win the FedEx Cup.

Burns will also have to make up a six-shot deficit at -4, but we love his upside as an elite putter and birdie-maker.
