Alijah Arenas, a five-star USC basketball commit, found himself in a precarious situation on Thursday. He was involved in a serious single-car accident that wound him up in the hospital and in an induced coma.
It was a terrible moment for USC hoops, college basketball and the basketball world in general. Arenas is the son of Gilbert Arenas, who had a tremendous NBA career from 2001-12.
After a crash and subsequent update like that, the natural inclination is to assume the worse. ESPN is reporting some great news coming out of the Arenas camp, though.
Not only is the five-star recruit out of the induced coma and healing up, but he's already improved enough to be released from the hospital.
"We are grateful to share that Alijah Arenas has been released from the hospital and is now resting comfortably under close watch," a statement released to ESPN's Shams Charania said. "While his journey to full recovery is just beginning, his spirit remains strong, and he is surrounded by love and support"

Alijah was driving back from a gym session on Thursday morning when he lost control of a Tesla Cybertruck he was driving. This was according to a statement on Gilbert Arenas' podcast, as relayed by ESPN.
The Cybertruck caught fire after it crashed into a tree and/or fire hydrant and upon entering the hospital, Arenas was put into an induced coma because of smoke inhalation. The good news is, however, he experienced no major injures because of the crash.
It does sound like he was in a critical situation at the time of the crash, but he was rescued by two people who helped him escape the truck.
Heartwarming news: Gilbert Arenas’ son Alijah has come out of his coma. Here’s a statement from the Arenas family. (And nice reminder there really are so many good people out there, and it’s a gift for us to get to look out for each other): pic.twitter.com/Ut2lbd950p

From Chatsworth, California, Arenas is ranked as the No. 1 shooting guard in the 2026 class, according to the 247Sports Composite. He's been committed to USC since Jan. 30.

While the Philadelphia Eagles, Detroit Lions and Washington Commanders have garnered a lot of attention lately, there is one NFC team that has quietly been flying under the radar. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers lost a one-score game to the Lions in the divisional round in 2023 and followed that up with another one-score loss to QB Jayden Daniels and the Commanders last season, proving how close they have been to the ultimate prize in the two seasons with Baker Mayfield under center. In an appearance on ESPN's "Get Up" Tuesday morning, analyst and former player Ryan Clark offered high praise for Mayfield and what the Buccaneers are capable of. "Baker Mayfield is a top-10 quarterback in this league," Clark said. "Baker Mayfield is a football player. And when I say that, I know people at home are gonna be like, 'Duh, he gets paid to play football.' No, not all quarterbacks are seen as football players. Not all quarterbacks are embraced in the locker room as one of us." Clark sees the Buccaneers as a team the rest of the league should be paying attention to because of who they have returning and the close calls in the playoffs the last two seasons. "This is a team that's been on the cusp the last two years," Clark said. "Now you think about some of the pieces they've added, the confidence in their quarterback and the way that he plays, and Todd Bowles with another year to understand winning at a high level at the head coach position. This is a team you better be extremely scared of because they're stacked and they're confident." Mayfield has been sensational during his time with the Buccaneers. Although he did throw 16 interceptions, Mayfield accounted for the third-most passing yards (4,500) in the league last season and has thrown the most TD passes (69) in the last two seasons, per StatMuse. To add even more incentive for Mayfield, the team restructured his contract, which is set to expire after the 2026 season, to include $30M in guaranteed salary for that season. The Buccaneers return a lot of production on both sides of the ball, in addition to bringing in first-round draft pick Emeka Egbuka, who topped 1,000 receiving yards twice at Ohio State and accounted for 26 total TDs. While Tampa Bay allowed the 17th-most points per game (22.7) last season, it returns the majority of its defensive production. On top of that, the offseason acquisition of veteran LB and two-time Pro-Bowler Haason Reddick, who agreed to terms on a one-year deal, should be a welcomed addition for a franchise that had some question marks on defense last season. The Buccaneers are projected to have the sixth-easiest schedule in the NFL this season and have the best chance to win the NFC South for the fifth consecutive season, according to ESPN Analytics. If Mayfield can cut back on his turnovers and the defense can create more pressure on opposing QBs, the Buccaneers could be a threat in the NFC once again as they look to put their recent nail-biting losses in the postseason behind them.
During Monday's training camp practice, Cleveland Browns rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders reportedly completed 9-of-9 passes with two touchdowns. While there has been plenty of buzz about what that can do for his standing in the team's quarterback battle, former NFL offensive lineman Rich Ohrnberger is convinced that the Browns may be building Sanders up for another reason. Ohrnberger suggested that not only could the defense be limited on purpose in terms of the plays that were being called in order to see how Sanders reacts, and also suggested the Browns want to show Sanders succeeding to increase his trade value. Would the Cleveland Browns Trade Shedeur Sanders? Although it'd be a bit surprising for a team to move on from a quarterback before seeing what he can do against real competition, the Browns' quarterback room is crowded. They have a veteran journeyman and Super Bowl champion in Joe Flacco, a former first-round pick in Kenny Pickett who they traded for and rookie Dillon Gabriel, who they drafted before Sanders in this year's draft. The demand for Sanders NFL if someone else goes down around the NFL. Cleveland's Front Office Must Decide How They Feel About Shedeur Sanders While the Browns risked virtually nothing by selecting Sanders with pick No. 144, owner Jimmy Haslam made it clear on Tuesday that drafting the son of Deion Sanders was general manager Andrew Berry's call. "If you'd told me...Let's see, we picked him on Saturday right," Haslam said. "Friday night, driving home y'all are gonna pick Shedeur. I would say 'That's not happening.' But we had a conversation early that morning and we had a conversation early that day. I think we had the right people involved in the conversation. At the end of the day that's Andrew Berry's call. Andrew made the call to pick Shedeur." If a consensus is reached that Sanders isn't bringing what they had hoped to the table, it only makes sense to trade him. However, if they feel as if he can finally end their search for a franchise quarterback or can be a viable backup, trading him doesn't seem like a smart move. What Shedeur Sanders Brings to the Table Although Sanders fell to the fifth round, he was widely viewed as a first-round talent throughout the entire draft process. While he doesn't have a massive arm or tremendous athleticism, he is extremely cerebral and efficient. He left Colorado having broken over 100 school records, setting the FBS record for completion percentage in a career (71.8%) and is also easily the most marketable rookie in his class. In April, sports business insider Darren Rovell reported that Sanders had the "No. 1 selling jersey among all 2025 draft picks." So, if the Browns can't find a role for Sanders, chances are another team gladly will.
Second-year Green Bay Packers running back Marshawn Lloyd can’t seem to catch a break. Chosen by the Packers with the No. 88 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, Lloyd dealt with hamstring injuries throughout training camp last summer before suffering a season-ending ankle injury just one week into his rookie season. Marshawn Lloyd Knocked from Packers Practice As the intensity ratchets up at Packers training camp, Lloyd’s second season may have already gotten off on the wrong foot, during Green Bay’s first practice in full pads this summer. According to ESPN’s Rob Demovsky, Lloyd stayed out on the field but didn’t continue to practice, instead watching from behind the huddle without a helmet. Demovsky points out that Lloyd was slow to get up but then did not return to practice the rest of the day. The Packers are likely hoping for big things from Lloyd, who is likely to compete with Emmanuel Wilson for the lion’s share of carries behind Wilson. It remains to be seen how serious Lloyd’s injury is, but if the 24-year-old is forced to miss any significant time, general manager Brian Gutekunst and the Packers may be wise to go shopping for some quality running back help in the days and weeks ahead.
Left-handed starting pitcher Blake Snell is in his 10th major-league season after making his debut with the Tampa Bay Rays in 2016. Snell spent time with the San Diego Padres, then signed a deal with the San Francisco Giants after the 2023 season, which he later opted out of to enter free agency in 2024. The 32-year-old veteran signed a five-year, $182M contract this offseason with the Los Angeles Dodgers after an exceptional 2024 campaign. Snell earned such a lucrative contract thanks to his outstanding career to date, which includes two Cy Young Awards and an All-Star appearance. Over 213 career starts, he owns a 77–58 record, a 3.18 ERA and 1,372 strikeouts. Snell was placed on the injured list on April 6 (retroactive to April 3) with left shoulder inflammation after experiencing discomfort during a bullpen session; he had made only two starts for the Dodgers before the injury. After four minor-league rehab outings, manager Dave Roberts announced on Sunday that Snell is expected to rejoin the rotation next week. With his return looming, the Dodgers have decided to shift to a six-man rotation but now face a decision on right-hander Dustin May’s roster status. May returned to a full-time starting role for the first time in two seasons and has struggled. On Sunday against the Boston Red Sox, May allowed four runs in five innings of work, and he entered the start with an ERA of 4.73. May’s name has surfaced in trade rumors, and he is a candidate to potentially be moved to the bullpen. He is an unrestricted free agent at the end of this season.
