Chiefs GM compares WR's injury timeline to Tyreek Hill's past situation

The Kansas City Chiefs got good news on Thursday when NFL spokesperson Brian McCarthy said that wideout Rashee Rice wasn't expected to be placed on the commissioner’s exempt list.

Chiefs general manager Brett Veach addressed the status of the team's other star wide receiver (offseason acquisition Marquise "Hollywood" Brown) on Thursday. Brown is returning from a shoulder injury he suffered in the preseason opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Aug. 10.

Veach compared the Oklahoma product's recovery timeline to that of former Kansas City All-Pro wideout Tyreek Hill, now with the Miami Dolphins. Hill suffered a shoulder injury in Week 1 of the 2019 season and missed the next four games.

"I don’t like talking about medical because if I say something and he’s ahead of that timeline or behind that timeline, then I don’t want to put any more pressure on the kid," Veach said, according to a report by ProFootballTalk's Myles Simmons. "I probably can confidently say it was similar to Tyreek, and I think given that timeline, it falls within the timeline that Tyreek went through, but I know he’s here every day. He’s to the point now where he can laugh without pain, so that’s a good thing."

Veach added that Brown is "certainly trending in the right direction."

Kansas City chose not to put the former first-round pick on injured reserve to begin the season. If Brown had been placed on IR, he wouldn't have been eligible to return to action until Week 5.
