Philadelphia Eagles players spent the offseason learning the system installed by new offensive coordinator Kellen Moore and new quarterbacks coach Doug Nussmeier as rumors suggested that head coach Nick Sirianni is on the hot seat coming off the team's collapse late last season.
Eagles offensive guard Landon Dickerson suggested during recent chats with Cayden Steele of NJ Advance Media for NJ.com that Moore could help the franchise do more than simply return to the playoffs.
"I guess the best way to describe it would be like if you were trying to teach a kid Algebra," Dickerson said about how Moore taught his offense. "You wouldn’t hop straight into Algebra for a fifth grader. You would say, 'Alright, we start with addition and subtraction and then go to multiplication and from there move up.' That’s kind of how it works."
It's now no secret that Eagles general manager Howie Roseman essentially forced Moore, Nussmeier and new defensive coordinator Vic Fangio on Sirianni after the club lost five of its last six regular-season games before it suffered a 32-9 wild-card playoff defeat at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Subsequent reports touched upon how the relationship between Sirianni and quarterback Jalen Hurts allegedly became "'fractured' and unhealthy" as the 2023 Eagles fell apart.
Sirianni has transitioned into "more of a CEO-type role," and that seemingly has allowed Moore and Nussmeier to take control of the offense along with Hurts. Eagles receiver A.J. Brown told Steele that Moore "makes it easier" to do his job as a wide receiver because the coordinator "gives us insight of what the quarterback is thinking."
Meanwhile, tight end Grant Calcaterra told Steele that Moore makes it "easy to look at different looks and get coached up on things" while watching film along with position coach Jason Michael.
"Kellen is a great teacher," practice squad quarterback Will Grier added. "He’s obviously very smart. I think he’s taken his experience from everywhere he’s been and done a job of blending it with what the Eagles have been good at recently and just trying to highlight those things and bring what he brings. He’s done a great job of communicating with Jalen. I think they are on the same page."
Some believe that Roseman could target former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick if the Eagles part ways with Sirianni this coming winter. However, young offensive minds are routinely coveted by front offices for head coach positions each offseason in the modern NFL.
Perhaps Moore, 36, could be named as Sirianni's replacement in January 2025 if the Eagles fail to complete a trip to the next NFC Championship Game.
