Watch: Patrick Mahomes sets Chiefs passing record in typical Mahomes fashion

Add another incredible feat to Patrick Mahomes' already-stellar resume.

In Thursday's season opener against the Baltimore Ravens, Mahomes broke the Kansas City Chiefs franchise record for passing yards. Unsurprisingly, the three-time Super Bowl champion and two-time MVP accomplished the feat on the most Mahomes-play ever.

With the Chiefs facing a 3rd-and-12 near midfield, Mahomes set the mark, scrambling to avoid pressure before finding his longtime security blanket, tight end Travis Kelce, for a 23-yard gain. The completion helped him move past Hall of Famer Len Dawson, who held the original record of 28,507 yards since retiring following the 1975 season.

Dawson, who died in 2022, was a seven-time Pro Bowler and two-time All-Pro, leading the Chiefs to three AFL championships and a victory in Super Bowl IV, where he earned MVP honors. After a storied career on the field, he transitioned to broadcasting, serving as the Chiefs radio color analyst while also hosting "Inside the NFL" on HBO for more than two decades.

Already the Chiefs' all-time leader in completions (2,386 coming into the year), Mahomes has passed Dawson on the Chiefs' all-time rankings for the second time. However, if he stays healthy, it will happen again.

With 219 career touchdown passes, Mahomes is only 19 away from passing Dawson for franchise lead, a feat that should be reachable this season. Meanwhile, he's also 19 regular-season victories from overtaking Dawson (93) in wins (74), but he'll have to wait until next year to claim it, at the very least.
