How Chiefs WR Xavier Worthy proved his explosiveness vs. Ravens

When the Kansas City Chiefs selected rookie Texas wideout Xavier Worthy with the No. 28 overall pick in April's draft, they found a perfect fit for their offensive scheme. Worthy's NFL Scouting Combine-record 40-yard dash of 4.21 seconds was indicative of what the Chiefs envisioned for his role to be in their offense.

In the team's season-opening 27-20 victory over the Baltimore Ravens on Thursday night, Worthy flashed his electric play-making abilities and the versatile ways Kansas City plans to utilize him this season.

While Worthy may have tallied just two receptions, one of them was a 35-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Earlier in the game, the speedy rookie had another score, on a 21-yard reverse. Per NFL Next Gen Stats, Worthy had a 5% chance to score at the time of handoff.

Worthy may be undersized at 5-foot-11 and just 165 pounds, but his lack of physicality will only matter a little if defenders can't catch him or get their hands on him.

"Xavier coming out as a rookie and having a rushing touchdown and a receiving touchdown, that was beautiful," head coach Andy Reid said after the win.

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes was beyond pleased with Worthy's performance, too.

"He's so cool, calm and collected all the time," Mahomes said. "You never even see the excitement on him, but he goes out there and makes plays. Obviously, we want to continue to use him more and more, but I thought he had a great day today, making big plays and big moments."

While this is just the beginning of Worthy's NFL career, he's off to about as good a start as possible.

"He can run and he's got good hands. Smart kid," Reid said. "He'll keep growing as we go. He's a competitive little guy, man."

Worthy's as electric of a playmaker the Chiefs have had since they traded Tyreek Hill to the Miami Dolphins two years ago. If Worthy winds up being even close to Hill's caliber of player, the Chiefs could be destined to win their third consecutive Super Bowl.
