The Green Bay Packers appeared to start their 2024 season with a touchdown. On the team's opening drive against the Eagles on Friday, Jordan Love connected with Jayden Reed for a 38-yard scoring strike. It was a great throw by Love and an outstanding play by Reed to break away from a tackle and get into the end zone.
It is the type of thing the Packers hoped to see when they signed Love to a long-term contract extension this offseason.
There was just one problem with the play.
It did not count. It did not count because there were offsetting penalties as both teams had 12 men on the field for the snap.
The Packers almost had the first touchdown of the game, but they, along with the Eagles, both got called for offsetting 12 men on the field penalties.

Hey, it is the first game of the season so there is going to be some rust and some communication issues. Plus, 12 men on the field penalties tend to happen on occasion. It is just a little unexpected to see both teams guilty of it on the same play, and have that negate what would have been a highlight-reel touchdown.
Maybe the Friday night kickoff still had everybody in preseason mode.
