With no set timetable of when Rebecca Allen and Charisma Osborne will return from injuries and Celeste Taylor’s seven-day contract set to expire soon, the Phoenix Mercury has brought back a familiar face to a short-term deal.

Before they clash against the Washington Mystics, the Mercury signed guard Amy Atwell to a seven-day contract on Thursday. She originally agreed to a training camp deal with Phoenix in April and played in the preseason before being waived.

Achieving something special for her home country of Australia, Atwell helped the Opals win a bronze medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics. With Allen suffering a right hamstring injury before the Olympic Games started, the 6-foot guard was promoted to Australia’s roster.

Atwell was selected by the Los Angeles Sparks with the 27th overall pick in the 2022 WNBA Draft. She played in four games as a rookie and started once. She averaged 0.8 points, 0.5 assists and 0.5 rebounds per game until she was waived on June 7, 2022. The University of Hawaii product has not appeared in the WNBA since then.

Collegiately, she was the 2021-22 Big West Conference Player of the Year with the Rainbow Wahine after posting 17.8 points and 6.9 rebounds per game.

With Atwell’s return to Phoenix, she becomes the 12th player to be on the roster, which is the maximum a team is allowed to have in the league. With Allen and Osborne out since the Olympic break, the Mercury has 10 available players for selection.

The Mercury takes on the Mystics tonight at 7 p.m. PT inside Footprint Center.
